Rieka the Red - New faces...

About New faces...

Sitting out in a garden she found, Rieka sits beneath the shade of a tree. Her pen moves quickly, but the writing is still legible. She knows not whose garden this is, or if it belongs to the public, but she hopes no one will not mind.

I have met several new people in recent times. It is interesting to see the people, and even more interesting when you actually talk to them for a short while. You'd be surprised of the types you meet along the way.

One of the more interesting people I met was an elf by the name of Fingon. I traveled up to a high place in the city, so that I could look down upon it and see the surrounding lands. But when I reached the top I found that I was not alone in my escape from the heart of the city. We talked only breifly, but the name sounds familiar. Almost as if I had heard it before.

Another I met was one by the name of Miriel. It was rain heavily the other night, and after taking shelter for a little while, I had decided not to wait any longer. Lighting up my staff with a flame, I stepped out in the flame. Apparently Miriel had heard of such things before and was intrigued by the simple magic I had performed. She, like me, is all alone here and fairly lost. I am not lost anymore, but I sympathize with her plight.

The third I met recently was Goldberry. I accidentally ran into her the other day by the stables. She is from somewhere to the north. I found her antics a little ammusing, though I think she hasn't been away from where she lives for long before. It should do her a little good to get out. She is not human, I believe she is born of some higher power, though I do not know what. She found that I was an Istar interesting.

Apparently, my suspicions were correct. I have not been mentioned, and if I ever was, I have long since been forgotten. But it does not bother me. It gives me a chance to come here without a reputation of any sort, and that should play to my advantage.

Stopping, Rieka places the pen and the journal back into her pocket. She leans back against the tree a little, just looking up at the sky. "It's a nice day."

"Indeed it is," comes an unexpected reply in a masculine voice full of quirky amusement, and, quick and agile as a cat, Isildur slides down from the treetop where he had been sitting and lands by Rieka. He grins at her, his mood very light after a sunny morning in the free air, and gives a theatrical bow.

"So I am not the only to take shelter in this place." She smiles, amused by the stranger. "And who, may I ask, are you?"

"No one of any importance," he answers cheerfully, waving a dimissive hand, "but a soldier who has seen his fill of war, and longs now for some peaceful talk in a friendly tongue with any who would provide it," again he bows, with no less show. "Daeradan at your service, lady."

"It is nice to meet you, Daeradan. I am Rieka, though I am afraid my occupation is not so noble as that of a soldier." She stretches her arms slightly.

"Noble?" He laughs. "Lady, I have not fought nobly a day in my life, which I deem is why I live still," musing on that point a second, he gives a quick shrug and settles down on the grass before her, half-lying and looking at perfect ease. "Might I then inquire as for your not-so-noble occupation?"

"In common terms, I have none," She leans back against the tree a little. "Though my manner of dress and minor powers mark me as an Istar, a wizard. I am a wanderer, though. Nowhere could hold me forever."

A wizard?! Without thinking, Isildur leaps to his feet and away from the woman in red. There is only one kind of wizards he knows, and the thought of one in his brother's city is as a searing blow.

"A wizard...!" He half-spits the word, snarling. "How come you to the White City? What had become of the people of Gondor that they let such a one pass their gates??"

Rieka, obviously confused and startled, stares at the man intently for a few moments. "Do not be afraid. I am not aligned and never have been aligned with forces such as those of Sauron or Morgoth. If I were a danger, would I let such an important thing out so casually?"

For a long minute Isildur stands perfectly still, full of rushing and conflicting thoughts. How dire could be his mistake? At length he speaks very slowly and stiffly, still not moving.

"Lady, I know no wizards but the men of Gorthaur who burn maids and children upon a black altar. There is logic in your words... but pray tell, where can magic be found if not among their ranks?"

Rieka paused at the name. She had done much reading since her coming and she knew the name. "You would be wise to use the name Suron instead of Gorthaur. Sauron is the name used in this age and the last. The wizards of which I speak came here during the third age. Like Sauron, we are Maiar so we have magic, but those that remain are not taken by the darkness. I know of only Gandalf that now lives." She stared at him for another moment. "You have been away from here for some time, I suspect, but I will not question you on it."

"I... thank you." Still he is uncertain and ill at ease. Maiar? Oh, surely she mocks him! "But tell me, if you are what you claim to be, why have you come? What has happened in hither lands to make the Greats of the West remember them of a sudden?" He smiles a bitter smile. "I do not remember that they have cared for them much."

"They have always cared as far as I have seen, but they know when to let the inhabitants of Middle Earth fight their own battles. If the Valar protected you completely, would you have a chance to grow? But the others have been here since just after the first millennium of the Third Age."

He scoffs. "Grow? Do you think that - " then he pauses; and of a sudden laughs with bitter understanding. "Of course, the Third Age. You do not know all that Men had once. I will tell you as one who should know, lady," he indicates the city around them with a sweeping gesture, "that this is no growth."

"Material things have declined, but growth cannot be measured in only that. Just recently, a dwarf has befriended an elf. Those two races have been at odds for quite some time. The ents, long in decline since the disappearance of the entwives, helped to defeat one who is much like myself, though tempted by the evil. Those of Rohan defeated a great army, despite recovering from a long period of time when the king was held captive. And here, here is one of the greatest growths. Aragorn refused the ring. That is something even Gandalf would have trouble doing."

At the mention of the name, Isildur seems to forget all else suddenly, his eyes flashing with curiosity. "This - Aragorn - who is he? I oft hear his name, but know not its importance."

"Aragorn? You have been away some time," she smirks, thinking of something, "Aragorn is Isildur's heir. He is the King of Gondor, the first in what I've read has been many years."

"The King of Gondor?!" The words are half-shouted. Isildur leaps to his feet once more, so quickly that he barely keeps his balance, and speaks breathlessly: "Forgive me, there is an urgent matter I must attend to!"

And without a word more, he turns and runs down the street as fast as he is able.

Rieka laughed, fully ammused as the man left. "I hope to see what comes of this."
